Welcome to Gracie Jiu Jitsu Durham - The triangle's official representatives of the Gracie AcademyIf you found your way to our site it is not by chance. We believe there is a reason you ended up here, and we believe that whether you’re just starting your martial arts journey or have been on your path for some time, we can help you reach your full potential, and achieve your self- defense/martial arts goals. Our mission is to empower as many people as possible with lifesaving self-defense skills, while having a great time in a non-threatening family environment.
Our training atmosphere is easy going, safe, and fun; and we guarantee you will learn practical skills you can use should the need ever arise. What is Gracie Jiu Jitsu? Gracie Jiu Jitsu (also known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is a highly effective martial art which uses leverage and timing to defend oneself. Because it is leverage based, as opposed to force against force, it enables a smaller, weaker person to defend against bigger stronger attackers. Since such a high percentage of real altercations end up on the ground, GJJ places a great deal of emphasis on ground fighting techniques. A GJJ practitioner becomes an expert in escaping, and/or finishing altercations on the ground (even if they are on their backs). They also incorporate standing/take down techniques (to get a person to the ground), where they then use “submission” (leverage-based joint locks) holds/moves to end the fight. Although Jiu Jitsu can also be done as a sport, our programs focus primarily on the street applicability of the art. We feel that the practical street application is the most important component of Jiu Jitsu, and this is why we start everyone off with Gracie Combatives. Gracie Training Centers don’t teach people how to fight. They give students complete self-defense confidence so they don’t have to fight. We are one of only three training centers authorized to teach the Gracie Combatives, Master Cycle, and bully proof programs in NC.
